Leonard Simon Nimoy (1931-2015)
My fellow Trekkies, it is with deep sorrow to inform that Leonard Nimoy who played the famous Mr. Spock has died today at 83 years old! He died from complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which causes from years of smoking tobacco in which he was diagnosed within a few months ago.
Leonard was born on March 26th, 1931 to immigrated Jewish parents and moved to Boston, Massasschuetts at a young age.
He started his film career in sci-fi in 1952 with Zombies from the Stratosphere. Then in 1966-1969 he was cast in the sci fi television show Star trek as Mr. Spock and would continue to play the role for over 40 years in 8 movies a two part Next generation episode and countless video games. His final film was actually Star trek: into darkness which parraelled Wrath of Khan. He is also an acclaimed director in which he directed two star trek films and three men and a baby. He had done voice over work through star trek, transformers, the Pagemaster and Atlantis: the lost empire. He had recently voiced Master Xehanort in the video game franchise Kingdom Hearts.
He had written two autobiographies one saying I’m not Spock and I am Spock in which he had been typecasted as the Vulcan character and explained his views on his life being identified as Spock and how it changed him from bad to good. He recently got his hands on photography and wrote a book about his work and his photos are displayed in a few muesems in Massachusetts.
It is a terrible shame to have lost an accomplished actor who was beloved by his colleagues and family. Many fans and I will miss this actor for many years. I would like to use a poem that was said in Star trek II: The wrath of Khan from the book “A Tale of Two Cities” “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” He can now rest in the planet Genesis which is now heaven. May his family find peace and looked after and as for Leonard Nimoy, rest in peace and Live long and prosper in heaven with God!
Breaking Trek news, the director Robert Orci has stepped down from the project for unknown reasons, The film hasn’t begun filming yet and will need to find a replacement. it is said that Edgar Wright is a contender as the director but who knows. The film will star the cast from the first two films, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana and John Cho. It is said to be released in 2016 for the 50th anniversary. When I hear more of it, ill let you guys know.
It appears that James T Kirk may return to the enterprise one last time (ooh no I’m talking about Chris Pine, I’m talking about William shatner) it appears that the director has a script currently with Leonard Nimoy/Spock and Kirk in a scene since 1991 in the undiscovered planet. If it is true it will have been over twenty years since bill had played shatner but it would have been 25 years since bill and Leonard as their characters onscreen together. I hope this scene stays in for the final script and will be on film. It would be quite a weird notion to have a scene with Leonard and Bill with the younger Kirk and spock, it will be super trippy man. The film is suppose to be out in 2016 just in time for he 50th anniversary. More updated will come when I hear more.
I thought I would take a quick moment to give my my two cents on the reboot version of J.J. Abrahams take on Star Trek. I think it is a very well done view point on the old enterprise crew but showing their origin story and their younger versions. I think J.J has done justice to Gene Roddenberry and with the franchise, by capturing the characters right and showing how different by showing a new side to Kirk and Spock then anybody saw in the show.
I think casting Chris Pine and Zachary quinto were both extraordinary choices, It was a very good break for Chris and for Zach Quinto. I think Pine was terrific as Kirk in the series, it was great that he didn’t do a Shatner Kirk take with breaking his words like Kirk did so it was good he made it his own. What was great was that Zach who was doing Heroes playing Sylar and then stepping into the well-known Vulcan was a big leap and big shoes to fill but it was a good role for him. Another big cast member involved was Zoe Saladana as Urhara who became well-known in the Sci-fi films, meaning she starred in this franchise, Avatar and the upcoming Guardians of the galaxy for Marvel. Also included in the cast were John Cho as Sulu, Anton Yelchin was Chekov Simon Pegg who frequently collaborates with Edgar Wright played Scotty, Karl Urban played McCoy and Bruce Greenwood played Admiral Pike. The movies couldn’t have been the same with out help from anyone from the original show, Gene Roddenberry’s wife reprised the role of the enterprise computer system. James doohan’s son contributed as a teleport navigator and there was…. Hmmm…. Ooh yea, Leonard Nimoy as SPOCK!!!! Mind blown!!! OOH and there was a small role for an actor who was going to be a part of the Marvel world in a big way, the man who played Kirk’s father was Thor himself; Chris Hemsworth
The villains were good choices, I liked Nero and John… Well KHAN!! They fit well with this timeline and serve purpose to the franchise.Eric Bana did a fine job playing Nero, I loved his role as the hellbent romulan wanting to best Spock who ruined him and his planet! Khan was played by, semi unknown actor named Benedict Cumberbatch 😉 Just kidding! I think he did a marvelous job as this role, and did justice to Ricardo Montlebaum but made it his own! The reveal of Khan came as a surprise to me because it was unknown if he was either going to be John Harrison or bring back a well known villain but it was great what they did with the character!
Now, since Mr. Abrahams is going off to do Star Wars 7, I’m not too worried about Trek, I think if the new director and screen writers have a good storyline it won’t be a problem. If it ends up being a huge disaster then at least there were two good movies for the Star Trek franchise. I can’t wait to see what J.J does with Star wars 7 and I am sure the fans of Trek can forgive him for leaving this franchise to go to Wars!
To conclude I think that the new franchise is heading in the right direction. It is giving a chance for new fans to come aboard where no man has gone before. I got into the series because of J.J. and now I have seen some Star Trek stuff and have a better understanding of the world. I think of the new franchise my fav would have to be Into Darkness, but if you look at the whole franchise I would say my fav would be Into darkness or Wrath of Khan. I can’t wait to see what the next film will be like and I hope you guys get a chance to see Star Trek in any form. Live long and prosper everyone
